Even before the slave trade begun, the color black was distasteful. The Africans were viewed as inferior and that was the beginning of racism. It was easy for the English enslave the Africans. They were helpless; the English tore them from their land and culture and they were no match for the English’s guns and ships. Africans were captured and sent to the coast where they were kept in cages until they were picked and sold. Then they were packed aboard the slave ships in spaces that were no bigger than coffins. The combination of desperation from the Jamestown settlers, difficulty of using whites and Indians as servants, the availability of Africans and their helplessness made them the ideal candidates for enslavement. They were the solution to the settler’s problems. Tabaco, cotton, and sugar plantations made the colonies extremely wealthy; however, there simply were not enough whites to meet the need of the plantations. So as the plantation system grew, slavery grew. The slaves were taught to be insubordinate. A Police State The Second Amendment vs. A Police State The United States of America has taken drastic steps in taking away the American peoples God given rights and Constitutional rights. The United States government is supposed to be a government of the people, by the people, for the people. There are very clear signs of a cancerous growth within our government and the citizens of America need to take preventative measures to ensure the freedom for which our founding fathers fought and died. I am speaking of numerous issues that have arisen in the United States that clearly demonstrate that our government is taking away our rights. I will hopefully be able to show a brief description of the government, as it is today and what it was designed to be. I will also describe our rights and the reasons for keeping those rights, such as the gun control laws that have been passed restricting our rights to bear arms. History serves us well in that it provides us with the facts that show increases in crime, poverty, injustice and overall social unrest is the result of Democracy as defined by our current administration. The fact is that the governments idea of a democracy and our idea of a democracy are two different meanings entirely. I speak about this because it directly affects the way that the United States government has taken away not only your Constitutional rights but also your God given ones. I have quoted below an excerpt from a military manual that I once read that struck me as very profound. In order to understand the true meaning of the word democracy, examine the definition of the word as provided by the 1928 American Military Training Manual and then compare it with the definition of the word Republic, taken from the same manual. Now remember these definitions the next time you see a public official or anyone else for that matter, standing before the camera talking about democracy: Democracy: A government of the masses. Authority is derived through mass meeting or any other form of direct expression. Results in a mobocracy. Attitude toward property is communistic, negating property rights. Attitude towards law is that the will of the majority shall regulate whether it be based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice and impulse without restraint or regard to consequences. Results in demagoguism, license, agitation, discontent, and anarchy. Republic: Authority is derived through the election of public officials best fitted to represent them. Attitude for property is respect for laws and individual rights, and a sensible economic procedure. Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences. A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass. Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy. Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment, and progress. (1928 American Military Training Manual) While our government was formed as a republic, we have lost that form and exchanged it for a democracy. The fact that our forefathers had set up a Republic and not a Democracy is a key to understanding the present government. Ours will be a democracy so long as our elected officials will vote which ever way the powerful winds of special interests blow, as long as they do not administer justice in accordance with fixed principles, those principles being set forth in the Bill of Rights. The vast majority of representatives need to be removed from office and replaced with those that will do a correct and honest job without thought of personal gain. We need to set term limits to keep career politicians out of office and elect citizen politicians who are true patriots to our great nation that are trying to uphold what our forefathers had original set forth in their sacrifices as the god given rights and Constitutional rights. Generational Names in the United States Generations in the United States are defined as social groups of people born around the same time who share similar cultural traits, values, and preferences. In the U.S. today, many people readily identify themselves as Millennials, Xers, or Boomers. But these generational names are a fairly recent cultural phenomenon and they vary depending on the source. The History of Naming Generations Historians generally agree that the naming of generations began in the 20th-century. Gertrude Stein is considered the first to have done so. She bestowed the title of Lost Generation on those who had been born around the turn of the century and bore the brunt of service during World War I. In the epigram to Ernest Hemingways The Sun Also Rises, published in 1926, Stein wrote, You are all a lost generation. Generational theorists Neil Howe and William Strauss are generally credited with identifying and naming the 20th-century generations in the U.S. with their 1991 study Generations. In it, they identified the generation that fought World War II as the G.I. (for Government Issue) Generation. But less than a decade later, Tom Brokaw published The Greatest Generation, a best-selling cultural history of the Great Depression and World War II, and that namesake stuck. The Origins of Cuban-Chinese Cuisine Cuban-Chinese Cuisine is the traditional fusing of Cuban and Chinese food by Chinese migrants to Cuba in the 1850s. Brought to Cuba as laborers, these migrants and their Cuban-Chinese progeny developed a cuisine that blended Chinese and Caribbean flavors. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, many Cuban Chinese left the island and some established Cuban Chinese food restaurants in the United States, mainly in New York City and Miami. Some diners contend that Cuban-Chinese food is more Cuban than Chinese. There are also other genres of Chinese-Latin and Asian-Latin food blends created by Asian migrants to Latin America over the last two centuries. Traditional Cuban Chinese food should not be confused with the current trend of Chino-Latino fusion restaurants that have a modern fusion take on the blending of these two cuisine cultures. Major Food Elements   The Chinese and Cubans are both fans of pork  and serve them as staple dishes. So it was only natural that many Chinese-Cuban specialties involve the â€Å"other white meat.† Popular pork dishes include grilled pork chops in black bean sauce – that’s the Chinese black bean, not the Latin one, using fermented black soy beans. Also popular is a Chinese-Cuban roast pork using Chinese five spice and Chinese-Cuban spare ribs. Rice is also a staple for both cultures. The Chinese in Cuba took local varieties of rice and cooked it in the Chinese stir-fry method in a wok, creating arroz frito, or fried rice. They also used the rice in a Chinese rice porridge, which is like a rice soup cooked with bits of meat and vegetables. Other starches also include noodles for hearty soups, and dough to make wonton wrappers. Plantains, yucca, and black beans are also featured in many Cuban Chinese dishes. Seafood such as fish and shrimp also make up many Cuban-Chinese dishes. Often fish, such as red snapper, is served in the Chinese style of frying or steaming it whole, with the head included, using only the lightest of flavorings such as ginger, scallion, cilantro, and lemon. Cultures in ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck Essay

John Steinbeck (1902 – 1968) was born in Salinas, California, which was also were the book ‘Of Mice and Men’ was set. At the time John Steinbeck introduced the book ‘Of Mice and Men’, money was a really big issue. This time was known as the ‘Great Slump’, also known as, the Great Depression. John Steinbeck had experience of life, as a farm labourer and could be why he chooses to tell the story about George Milton and Lennie Smalls, two ranchmen in Americas South West The story opens with Ranchmen George and Lennie fleeing their old workplace, with Lennie having been accused of rape. It soon’ becomes clear that Lennie has the mental age of a child, and that George is his guardian. In the book â€Å"Of Mice and Men†, John Steinbeck makes lots of cultural references to America in the 1930’s. There is one character who called ‘ Crooks’ and he is black, but in the ranches ‘Crooks’ was known as a â€Å"Nigger†, in the 1930’s the word â€Å"Nigger† was not offensive to black people , but now days it is. In ‘Of Mice and Men’ there are three characters which are female and their names where ‘Curleys Wife’, ‘Auntie Clara’ and ‘Suzy’. In many ways Curleys Wife was treated without respect since she had no friends, neither did she have someone to talk to. The ranchmen had referred to her as a ‘Tart’ which showed the women didn’t have much of a value and were judged by their looks. The reason why John Steinbeck has used the word â€Å"Tart† towards Curleys Wife is because she is a ‘Femme Fatale’, who uses makeup and flirts with any men that she sees, and also this is why she hasn’t got a name in ‘Of Mice and Men’. The author used this negative language to give the effect of disrespect and to portray a negative atmosphere and attitude towards women.
